Meet Christine Swaby-Hall, a resilient 54-year-old resident of Waterford, Portmore, St Catherine, who has been battling diabetes for 29 years. Her journey has been one of unwavering determination, but in recent years, the challenges have intensified. Christine’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and she needs our support now more than ever.

In the face of adversity, Christine has displayed unparalleled courage. Unfortunately, the complications stemming from diabetes have taken a severe toll on her health. She has been diagnosed with tractional retinal detachment in her right eye, a condition that demands immediate surgical intervention. To make matters even more challenging, she has lost her vision completely in her left eye.

“I have been severely sick since 2019,” Christine Swaby-Hall bravely shares. Her eye problems have emerged as a consequence of her diabetes diagnosis. The situation became so dire that she once suffered a devastating fall, breaking her leg, simply because she misjudged the height of a sidewalk.

Christine sought medical help at Kingston Public Hospital, where they discovered that her eye was bleeding from the back. An emergency laser surgery was initially planned, but it had to be canceled due to a malfunctioning machine. This left Christine in a desperate situation, grappling with her deteriorating eyesight.

Diabetes, as many of us know, can gradually damage a person’s eyes, leading to vision loss and, in severe cases, blindness. Imagine the daily struggles Christine faces. She has been living with diabetes since she was 25 years old, and her life has become increasingly challenging as her vision has deteriorated. Simple tasks like cooking have become nearly impossible for her.

Adding to her difficulties, Christine has faced personal hardships. She became estranged from her husband shortly after her diabetes diagnosis, and her primary source of financial support was her sister, who lived abroad. Tragically, her sister passed away from cancer in May, leaving Christine feeling even more alone in her battle.

Christine Swaby-Hall has sought help from numerous ophthalmologists in her quest to restore her sight, but she has encountered limited success. Specialists have told her that her condition is irreversible, but Christine refuses to accept this grim prognosis. She persevered in her search and eventually found a specialist in the Corporate Area who has given her a glimmer of hope.

However, this hope comes at a considerable cost. Christine’s surgery to restore her sight, which includes repairing the detached retina and addressing cataracts, is estimated at $1.5 million.
